  1. An amount measured in relation to another amount.
The car was travelling at a rate of speed of fifty kilometres per hour.
  1. A price or fee determined in relation to a particular scale or standard.
The central bank sets an interest rate.
  1. A price per unit for a service or product.
Postal rates here are low.
  1. The relative speed of change or progress.
The rate of production at the factory is skyrocketing.
  1. (statistics) A measure of the frequency of a given event, typically expressed as the number of occurrences of the event for every thousand or hundred thousand people in the total population considered.
The mortality rate in the country was unusually high.
  1. wage, Wages calculated in relation to a unit of time.
The pay rate is ten dollars per hour.
  1. A level of quality.
This textbook is first rate.

  1. (transitive) To assign or be assigned a particular rank or level.
She is rated fourth in the country.
  1. (transitive) To evaluate or estimate the value of.
They rate his talents highly.
  1. (transitive) To consider or regard.
He rated this book brilliant.
  1. (transitive) To deserve; to be worth.
The view here hardly rates a mention in the travel guide.
  1. (transitive) To determine the limits of safe functioning for a machine or electrical device.
The transformer is rated at 10 watts.
  1. (transitive) (chiefly ) To evaluate a property's value for the purposes of local taxation.
  2. (transitive) (informal) To like; to think highly of.
The customers don't rate the new burgers.
  1. (intransitive) To have position (in a certain class).
She rates among the most excellent chefs in the world.
He rates as the best cyclist in the country.
  1. (intransitive) To have value or standing.
This last performance of her's didn't rate very high with the judges.

noun (wikipedia, repeater, repeater (electronic device))
  1. (electronics) an electronic device that receives a weak or low-level signal and retransmits it at a higher level or higher power.
  2. (firearms) a gun that has a store of cartridges and does not need reloading after each shot.
  3. (ufology and similar studies) a person who regularly sees unexplained sightings of paranormal phenomenon.
Note " this term is more commonly used by skeptics of the paranormal, and implies that the witness lacks credibility.
