  2. (engineering)The act of separating a body from others by nonconductors, so as to prevent the transfer of electricity, heat, sound; also, the state of a body so separated.
  3. (electrical) a medium in which it is possible to maintain an electrical field with little supply of energy from additional sources; then energy required to produce the electric field is fully recoverable only in a complete vacuum the ideal dielectric when the field or applied voltage is removed; used to a) save space, b) enhance safety, c) improve appearance.
