  1. (zoology) Panopea abrupta or Panope generosa, family Hiatellidae, is a species of large saltwater clam, also known as the king clam or elephant trunk clam, native to the North American Pacific Northwest, Washington to Alaska. In the past 30 years, it has become a delicacy item in Asia, particularly in Japan, showing up as sashimi; on Japanese menus, it is termed mirugai or mirukuigai. It has become a major aquaculture item in Puget Sound.
Etymology: Native American Nisqualli, 'dig deep', pronounced "gooey-duck".
