- a rubble filled drainage ditch around a field or allotment
- an older version of the above (Briton Bocs) were a field was enclosed with thick hedgerow usually Boxwood, Beech or Hawthorn sometimes raised on a turf dyke (Greensheil) to box the cattle in, this Medieval spelling may have originated from the simple merging of the words Baulk and Box. This term was used right up to intrduction of barbed wire. The words "Book" is derived from the Brythonic word "Bocs" where messages were written on the stripped smooth bark of the Beech tree.
