English

Etymology
OE. term|synn. The same root appears in several other Germanic languages, e.g., Old Norse term|synd, German term|Sünde. The word may derive, ultimately, from IE. root *term||es-|to be. Latin also has an old present participle of term|esse in the word term|sons, term|sont-||guilty. The root meaning would appear to be, "it is true;" that is, "the charge has been proven." The Greek word term|scGrek|αμαία|μαία|trhamartia|to miss the mark, to miss the target is often translated as sin in the New Testament.
