Borrowed from F. oxygène (originally in the form principe oxygène, a variant of principe oxigine â��acidifying principleâ��, suggested by w:Lavoisier|Lavoisier), from AGr. polytonic|á½�ξÏ�Ï� (oxus) sharp + polytonic|γÎνοÏ� (genos) birth, referring to oxygen's role in the formation of acids.
