Etymology
Compound of jack and daw. The former element may refer either to its characteristic call, often represented as tchak-tchak, or to the name Jack. The latter, daw, means "jackdaw" in itself, from Old English *dÄÆ¿e, and is cognate with Old High German tÄha, which through Middle High German tÄhele became modern German Dohle
