Etymology
Old English ær|ǣr. (adv., conj., & prep.), from Gmc. *airiz comp. of *air "early," from PIE *ayer- "day, morning" (cf. Avestan ayar "day," Gk. eerios "at daybreak", see also era). The adv. erstwhile retains the O.E. superl. ærest "earliest."
