Etymology
A twentieth-century borrowing of Ancient Greek á¼Î¼Ïάθεια (empatheia), literally âpassionâ (formed from εν- en-, âin, atâ + ÏÎ¬Î¸Î¿Ï pathos âfeelingâ), coined by w:Rudolf Lotze|Rudolf Lotze to translate German Einfühlung. The modern Greek word εμÏάθεια has an opposite meaning denoting strong negative feelings and prejudice against someone.
