From L. term|chamaeleon|langla < AGr. term|scpolytonic|ÏÎ±Î¼Î±Î¹Î»ÎÏÎ½||crawling lion|trkhamaileon|langgrc, a kind of lizard known for changing its colour, also the name of various plants, so called from their leaves changing colour, < ÏÎ±Î¼Î±Î¯ (khamai) "on the earth, on the ground" + Î»ÎÏÎ½ (leon) "lion". First attested in w:1340|1340.
