Said to have been adapted by w:George Lucas|George Lucas from Japanese jidaigeki (meaning "period drama" motion pictures about samurai), or perhaps contaminated by association with the warrior�s title "jed" in the w:Barsoom Books|Barsoom Books by w:Edgar Rice Burroughs|Edgar Rice Burroughs, a series which Lucas considered adapting to film before his work on Star Wars.
