Etymology
Said to have been adapted by w:George Lucas|George Lucas from Japanese jidaigeki (meaning "period drama" motion pictures about samurai), or perhaps contaminated by association with the warrior�s title "jed" in the w:Barsoom Books|Barsoom Books by w:Edgar Rice Burroughs|Edgar Rice Burroughs, a series which Lucas considered adapting to film before his work on Star Wars.

- A fictional order of beings from George Lucas� w:Star_Wars|Star Wars universe who are gifted with heightened sensitivity to and awareness of "The Force." According to the "prequel" films, the Jedi are those beings who are most highly infested by the "midi-chlorians"�microbial symbiotes that communicate the "will of the Force" to the Jedi adept. The Force is what gives the Jedi their power. It surrounds them and binds them. The Force is in all living things, from human to plants.
