Etymologic

This site features an etymology word game, called Etymologic. In the game you are presented with 10 randomly selected word origin or word definition puzzles to solve. You are given a question and four possible answers. You can play the game as many times as you like, with different questions being generated for each new game.

The Roots of English

Roots of English is a free software package developed by Dr. Cotter at Seton Hall University. The software will help you find the Greek and Latin roots of thousands of words in the English language, and the hypertext links make it fast and easy to use. The Dictionary also contains background on the history of English and details on the sources of individual words.

This site features the etymology of common words and phrases. It also includes a brief history of the English language and a discussion board. This is a well-written and interesting etymology site. The words and phrases chosen are appropriate and intriguing. The search option allows you to view the words and phrases that are available for each letter of the alphabet. For the convenience of return visitors, the site also highlights which words that have been recently added.
