  1. A merchant that sells tools such as hammers, saws, wrenches, etc., various fasteners such as nails, screws, nuts and bolts, and similar objects known collectively as hardware. A hardware store will usually include a wide range of related sundry, sundries used in construction and repair such as lumber, gardening, plumbing supplies, carpeting, paint, appliances, cleaning supplies and sundry items such as house numbers. Typically a hardware store carries virtually all of the types of tools, supply, supplies and equipment used to build objects (such as some furniture and fixtures) as well as construction of complete structures such as houses and other buildings.
