Definition of adoptionism

(Christianity) A Christian heresy which has taken different forms over time, and still has currency today. Essentially, the adoptionist view maintains that Jesus is divine only in the sense that God the Father adopted him, either at Jesus' birth, or at his death. This challenges the orthodox understanding of the nature of the Trinity.
