Coined in 2001 by Paul Steinhardt, from Ancient Greek εκπυρωσις (ekpurÅ�sis) "conflagration, ecpyrosis", referring in w:Stoic philosophy|Stoic philosophy to the destruction and recreation of the world in fire.
