  1. w:John Locke, John Locke (1632 " 1704); an influential English philosopher of the Enlightenment and social contract theorist. He argued that a government could only be legitimate if it received the consent of the governed and protected the natural rights of the governed. If such consent was not given, citizens had a right of rebellion. His writings influenced the American revolutionaries as reflected in the American Declaration of Independence.
