The regression of a liver tumor after irradiation of bone that the tumor metastasized to is an example of the effect.
Etymology: From ab ("away from") and Greek scopos "a target for shooting at." Term first described by Dr. R. J. Mole in 1953 in the British Journal of Radiology, "Whole body irradiation- radiobiology or medicine?" . Br. J. Radiol., 26: 234-241, 1953.
