From Matthíus, the English spelling Matthew (earlier Matheu) comes directly from the Matthieu. Ultimately derived from the name (Matatyahu, Mattathias) or (Matityahu, Mattithiah), Matthew means "gift of Tetragrammaton, the Lord; gift of the god Yahu".
