According to the "prequel" films, the Jedi are those beings who are most highly infested by the "midi-chlorians""microbial symbiotes that communicate the "will of the Force" to the Jedi adept. The Force is what gives the Jedi their power. It surrounds them and binds them. The Force is in all living things, from human to plants.
