  1. A mountain that contains a magma chamber attached to the mantle of the planet or moon and which periodically erupts forth, usually explosively, with lava and volcanic gases.
Etymology: From Italian vulcano, from Vulcanus "Vulcan," the Roman god of fire and metalworking. Perhaps related to Greek (polytonic, á) (pyr) "fire" and (kaiein) "to burn."
