  1. (pathology) A viral disease that causes acute encephalitis in warm-blooded animals and people. The virus is found in the saliva of infected animals and transmission is usually caused by a bite. It is characterised by abnormal behaviour such as excitement, aggressiveness, and dementia, followed by paralysis and invariably death. Post-exposure vaccination can prevent symptoms from developing.
Etymology: Latin Latin, rabiÄs, rage, from rabere, to be angry.
