  1. The belief that the universe is divine and should be revered. Pantheism identifies the universe with God but denies any personality or transcendence of such a God.
  2. (rare) The belief in all gods; omnitheism.
Etymology: From ' (pín) "all" and ' (Theós) "god". The term "pantheist" - of which "pantheism" is a variation - was purportedly first used by Irish writer w:John Toland, John Toland in his 1705 work, Socinianism Truly Stated, by a pantheist. A critic of Toland, J. Fay, was the first to use the term "pantheism" in 1709, in Defensio Religionis.
