Etymology
OE. treow|trēow, from Germanic *trewōn, from Proto-Indo-European *drew-o-, a suffixed variant of *dreu-, *deru- ‘solid, steadfast, wood, tree’. Cognate with Danish træ; and (from the same Indo-European source) with Ancient Greek polytonic|δόρυ ‘wood, spear’, polytonic|δρῦς ‘tree, oak’, Russian дерево, Lithuanian dervà, Welsh derwen ‘oak’.
