OE. pund, from Ger. *punda-, an early borrowing from L. pondo|pondÅ in libra|lÄ«bra pondo|pondÅ âa pound by weightâ (a misinterpretation: pondo|pondÅ is the adverb meaning âby weightâ, originally an ablative form of pondus). Cognate with Dutch pond, German Pfund, Swedish pund.
