Middle English graffe < Old French greffe ("stylus") < Latin graphium ("stylus") < Greek γÏαÏείον < γÏάÏειν ("to write"); probably akin to English carve. So named from the resemblance of a scion or shoot to a pointed pencil. Compare graphic, grammar.
