First appeared around 1350–1400, either borrowed from MD. clocke (Dutch klok ‘bell, clock’), from Ger.; or from Northern OF. cloque ‘bell’ (French cloche), from L. clocca. Related to Old English clucge, German Glocke, Swedish klocka, Irish clog, Breton kloc'h.
