Etymology
Probably derived from, or at least cognate with, Old Norse and Icelandic banga "to pound, hammer," perhaps of onomatopoetic origin, coinciding with Korean 방� (banga) "pounding" or milling of grain. More cognates may include Danish banke "to beat," German Bengel "club," etc.
