The standard English form of the New Testament name ÎαÏÎ¸Î±Î¹Î¿Ï (Matthaios), an AGr. transliteration of the JAram. diminutive ××ª× (Mattay, Maty). From L. Matthæus, the English spelling Matthew (earlier Matheu) comes directly from the F. Matthieu. Ultimately derived from the He. name ×תת××× (Matatyahu, Mattathias) or ×ת×ת××× (Matityahu, Mattithiah), Matthew means "gift of Tetragrammaton|the Lord; gift of the god Yahu".
