Etymology
From Greek Ἰνδία, via Latin India, derived from ἸνδÏÏ, the Indus River. ἸνδÏÏ itself comes from the Pers. FAchar|ÙÙØ¯ (Hend) (in Sanskrit sindhu, river). English in the 9th century (in King Alfred's translation of Orosius), and again since the 17th century.
